One of the biggest influences in drag racing was a Detroit native, and a frequent racer at Detroit Dragway. This person’s name is Jay Howell. Jay was born in Detroit, Mi. and later moved to Huntington Woods, MI. As a young teenager Jay spent many weekends, and night cruising Woodward Ave.
Shirley Muldowney
We can’t talk about Detroit Dragway legends without the name of Shirley “First Lady of Drag Racing” Muldowney. We are happy to say Shirley is a Michigan resident. There are many articles on the net telling people of all of Shirley’s accomplishments.
THE RAMCHARGERS
Being a die hard Mopar fan I have many good memories of the Ramchargers. The Ramchargers started in 1959 when a group of Chrysler engineers joined forces, Their first car was a 1949 Plymouth business coupe named “The High & Mighty”.
THE BOUNTY HUNTER
The Bounty Hunter, Connie Kalitta is another Michigan drag racer, and probably one of the best known racers in the business. There is so much you can write about Connie, but all you need to do is just do a search with his name and you will get hours worth of reading.
FUNNY – HONEY
Another Michigan native that made Detroit Dragway her home is Della Woods of Lake Orion. Della started her racing career in 1964. Della was the first woman to run the quarter mile in less than six seconds. She was also the first woman to go over 220 m.p.h. in the quarter mile, and the first over 230 m.p.h the first over 240m.p.h. Della the first woman to enter a funny car in a pro event in the 1969 Winternationals at Pomona, California.
